Ben Sandofsky, the co-founder of Halide, has made it clear that video capture will not be incorporated into the well-known iPhone photography app. Instead, Lux, the team behind Halide, is developing a new app called Kino, dedicated to video capture for iPhones. This initiative is in response to Apple’s support for log video encoding, and the app is set to launch in February, assuming everything goes according to plan.

Kino’s development was sparked by Apple’s announcement of support for log video encoding in September, a format that retains more detail for post-production color grading. As Sandofsky puts it, “Log video is to filmmakers what RAW is to photographers.” It’s a potent file format that allows for more advanced editing capabilities. Currently, Apple Log, Apple’s version of the log video encoding format, is only supported on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Details about Kino’s features are currently sparse, and the pricing is yet to be disclosed. Sandofsky mentioned using a “simple version” of the Kino app to record his video announcement but didn’t elaborate on any specifics. The Kino team has set a deadline to launch the app by February 2024 to circumvent any potential delays that might arise due to the arrival of Sandofsky’s first child (congratulations!). They will be transparently sharing developmental updates along the way. As Sandofsky stated, “We have an idea for what we want the app to be, but we don’t know how we’re going to get there.”
